A day tour from Rome to Tivoli to visit Hadrian’s Villa outside the town and/or Villa D’Este in the town will give you insight into the lifestyles of the rich and famous of glorious epochs past: Emperor Hadrian, the most powerful man on earth; and Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, the scion of prestigious nobility, who indulged his love of fountains and gardens to create the most splendid Renaissance villa in the Roman countryside.
Tivoli’s Villa D’Este will enchant you instantly with its perfect blend of architecture, landscape and water. The 16th century fountains and gardens of Villa D’Este in Tivoli, set along the slopes of the hill beneath the villa building, were celebrated in their own time as an “eighth wonder of the world” for their magnificence.
Villa D’Este’s gardens are still luxuriant and create a perfect setting for the countless fountains in highly imaginative forms and ensembles that make this architectural itinerary through a refreshing, “naturally air conditioned” environment one that will lift your spirits on even the hottest day. You will learn about the tremendous effort involved to create the green garden over a limestone terrain and to channel the water through the town to feed the fountains, and the ill will created among the humble people of Tivoli, who had little love for the pope and for the cardinal who represented him in Tivoli.

Pompei represents an unique patrimony of sculpture architecture, sculpture paintings and mosaic. Pompei is famous all over the world because of the great tragedy of 79 a.C., when the rich Roman town was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius, together with Stabie, Oplontis and Ercolano. It was a terrible tragedy that however has allowed the preservation of the town for so many centuries.. Now visitors can see how Roman towns lived. We begin our trip in the past The inhabitants, who for the most part fled in the direction of the coast, were suffocated by the fumes of the gases, others met death in their own homes. In Pompeii there is a garden named “Garden of the fugitives” is so called because when Vesuvio erupted 13 people, including 3 children, were trapped and died. Today you can see people asphyxiated by the Gases of Vesuvio. The ancient city was brought to light during the reign of Charles, King of Sicily, in 1748, after the unification of Italy in 1861, the archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli excavated city of Pompei giving us so one of the most important documents of roman life. Archaeologist introduced the method of casts, made of small channels in the ground and introduced a liquid solidifying plaster took the form of the positions of people who died thousand of years ago. The Social life in Pompei had a pyramidal form behind were the poor, the slaves merchants and nobles. The homes of the merchants and nobles were very large, had a dining room where the boss do business with his guests, at the center there was a pool where they gathered the rainwater that was intended for household use. In the homes of the artisans was a room where they worked the cotton to make clothes, their protector was the Goddess of love, Venus. In most homes were depicted in paintings and mosaics various deities. People were polytheistic people that believed in multiple gods. In some houses have been found small shrines dedicated to various gods: Venus, Mars, Mercury and Apollo. The streets were called “decumanus” derived from Latin and means “ten men” or better roads were as wide as ten men. Current technology in the past was inexistent, the sewage system there wasn’t. People throw waste and dirty water in the street, for this reason they invented the stone walkways, in this way people could walk without touching the dirty. Another demonstration of Pompei’s technology was the use of sliding doors which differentiate the house from the shop. Pompei was a city very active. The main activity of the traders is to sell agricultural products. The wine and drinks were kept in big clay pots. There were many ways to have fun like going to the theatre to watch dramatic or comic show; men after practicing sport, went to relax to the baths. Visiting this town is like a journey into the past.
